What is the plantaris tendon?
- What is the plantaris tendon? Plantaris tendon arises from the muscle. This muscle starts at the knee and travels between the two large calf muscles. In the middle of the calf, the muscle becomes a small tendon. As the tendon travels down the calf, it courses close to the inside of the larger Achilles tendon.
What is the difference between an Achilles tendon tear and plantaris tear?
- Plantaris muscle tears can be differentiated from an Achilles tendon tear in that the foot can be pointed downward following the plantaris rupture. With an Achilles tear, it cannot. Plantaris ruptures can also be confused with a blood clot in the large veins of the calf, called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). 2
What is the role of MRI in the diagnosis of plantar tendon disorders?
- Familiarity with the normal anatomy of the plantar tendons and its appearance at magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and ultrasonography (US) is essential for recognizing plantar tendon disorders. At MR imaging, the course of the plantar tendons is optimally visualized with dedicated imaging of the midfoot and forefoot.
What does a normal plantar tendon look like on ultrasound?
- Normal plantar tendons appear as low-signal-intensity structures with all MR sequences. At US, accurate evaluation of the tendons requires that the ultrasound beam be perpendicular to the tendon. The normal tendon appears as a compact linear band of echogenic tissue that contains a fine, mixed hypoechoic and hyperechoic internal fibrillar pattern.
