Durante il letargo il ghiro tende a raggomitolarsi su sé stesso, avvolgendo la coda intorno al corpo come protezione dal freddo. Prima che il ghiro vada in letargo sarà necessario sistemare la gabbia in un ambiente asciutto, al riparo dalla luce e lontano dai rumori esterni.
