Uno sterzo solitamente è composto da un volante collegato al piantone dello sterzo o asta di collegamento che trasmette il moto rotatorio alla scatola dello sterzo, la quale lo converte in moto rettilineo grazie ad una barra trasversale (auto meno recenti) o una cremagliera (auto più recenti) etc.
